Classroom Highlights:
Vernal Middle School's Art Department kicked off the school year with a great presentation and activity on community presented by Springville Museum of Arts. The Museum was originally started by high school art students in 1903. It concentrates on mostly contemporary artists and now houses over 2600 works in its permanent collection from twentieth-century Soviet Realist Art and American Art.
VMS art students studied works of Utah artists and how their work relates to different communities and how it is similar to their own. Then they created their own "quilt" squares that they identify with. We are assembling a giant collage for display with our quilt pieces here in the district for all to see. GO VMS!
Vernal Middle School 6th grade art students welcomed Native American artist Geraldina Selestewa back to their class. She showed us some of her beautiful beading for her regalia that was made for her by family and her son's beaded regalia pieces that she made. She is passing on important traditions by teaching her younger family members about this art.
We learned about tradition and how important it is in our everyday day life. As a dancer representing her family and the Ute Tribe at different Pow-Wows in the western states, we learned from her more about our neighbors in the Tribe and the importance of dance and art in the native American culture.
After learning from Mrs. Selestewa, VMS 6th graders were excited to start their own loom beading project.
